About this workshop:

Hermann Kilian (1929 – 2004) was a German calligrapher, typographer, book designer whose work was epitomized by classical simplicity with an underlying tension within every letter. Since I first saw his original work at the Klingspor Museum Offenbach his works have been my spiritual nourishments. I have been studying his works and have been asking how his surprising works were created.

In this workshop, I will share my study of drawn Capital letters.  It starts with  reviewing  the forms of Roman Capitals, and then studying Kilian's works with tracing exercises. We will analyze his letterforms and layout, and write individual chosen texts using some of his styles. The technical instructions given in this workshop are designed to help you become proficient in using your tool to draw built-up capital letters. I hope this study will increase your interest in drawn capitals, as well as give you new ideas of drawn letters.

Please note: This workshop is geared toward Intermediate to Advanced students.

Workshop recording will be available for a month following the event.
