Presenter: Jane Shibata

Sponsor: Inland Empire/Pomona Valley

About this Workshop: Meld the past and the present with a seventeenth century French hand called "ronde". Evidence of very clear exemplars indicate that the ronde script was taught in school. Visually, it has some characteristics of the secretary hand and civilité type. It is also a script that can be adapted to a monolinear style for everyday writing. We will be getting up-close and personal with the original version first and then apply some modifications to make the letters contemporary. Some experience with a broad edge nib is recommended.

About Jane: Jane Shibata teaches part-time in the art department at Santa Monica College in California and runs a design business specializing in the lettering arts in Los Angeles. Jane worked for the City of Los Angeles as a calligrapher for a few years and has done contract calligraphy work for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Graphic Arts division. She is a long-time Society for Calligraphy Southern California member who serves on the board, coordinates outreach events, and teaches many workshops for the Society for Calligraphy. Jane has also taught for a few other guilds in California and other states, SfC Letters California Style, and four international calligraphy conferences.

This workshop will be recorded, with the recording available for one month.
