SECOND SERIES ADDED DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND.

Sessions will be recorded and available for one month, following the last session: Four Wednesdays. May 4, 11, 25, June 1, 1:30-3PM. (No class on May 18.)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:Throughout the long reign of Queen Elizabeth I, England enjoyed a surge in art, science, literature, and new world explorations. Meanwhile, existing correspondence sent to and from the Queen revealed conspiracies, plots, proposals, assassinations, beheadings and other intrigues that characterized her reign. The letters signed by the queen were written mostly by secretaries who were entrusted with protecting the interests of the queen and keeping her secrets—hence the word secretary. The handsome and modestly flourished hand they wrote is quite readable and easily learned once several unfamiliar letterforms are explained. It is also accepting of the idiosyncrasies of one’s own handwriting. In this class we will explore the script, the form of the letter itself, and ways of folding the letters for dispatch. Finally, as a form of continuing practice, we will dispatch letters of our own.
