ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Developed by Edward Johnston (1872-1944) in the mid-1920s, Gothicized Italic is a versatile and practical Gothic hand that combines the advantageous elements of other Blackletter styles, such as the tall, slender forms of the Texturas, and the pointed character of the o's and arches that energize the Gothic Cursives and Batardes.

This broad-edged style is also known as "Pointed Gothic," "Heavy Italic," and "Johnston's Compressed Hand."  The late Sheila Waters (1929-2022) further developed this style into a more vigorous and lively script, making it an immediate favorite among scribes all over the world.

In this class, we will learn:

Broad pen basics

Characteristics that define Gothicized Italic as a Gothic script as well as what sets it apart from other Blackletter styles

Stroke-by-stroke formation of minuscules and majuscules

Spacing, simple variations and flourishes

The workshop will be recorded and available for two months.

SUGGESTED EXPERIENCE: Beginner through advanced.
