Drawn Minuscules - Study of Works by Hermann Kilian (September 19, 2026)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Hermann Kilian (1929 – 2004) was a German calligrapher, typographer and book designer whose work was epitomized by classical simplicity with an underlying tension within every letter. I would like to share my study of his minuscules that has been lifting my calligraphy study.

This program starts from understanding traditional monoline minuscules - the Foundational hand, Italic hand, and English Roundhand - that deeply relate to Kilian’s minuscule forms. Then we will analyze a couple of Kilian's unique minuscule forms. We will trace some of his works and draw several alphabets with pencils, fine line markers, ruling pens and pointed pens. We will write a short text with one of his minuscule forms. As our project, we will work on square or rectangle border writing with the minuscule.

SUPPLY LIST:

Sketch or drawing paper: letter size (A4) or larger about 15 sheets
Grid paper, letter size or larger, about 3 sheets
Layout bond paper (like Borden Riley #37 Boris marker layout, letter size or larger), about 5 sheets
Good watercolor paper like Arches Hot Press, Arches MBM and/or Arches text wove, letter size or larger 1- 3 sheets

Black gouache (Winsor & Newton Ivory Black or Perylene Black recommended)
2-3 favorite colors of good quality gouache

Pencil HB or 0.3 and 0.5mm HB mechanical pencil
Pigma Micron sizes 005, 01, and 02 or compatibles
A pointed nib, any brand (I will use Tachikawa G nib and Brause Extra Fine EF66 nib)
Ruling pen whatever you have with sharp point (I use German Ruling Pen Haff-U)

Ruler, eraser,mixing brushes, water container, pipette, 6-well palette, rags
Gum Sandarac (optional)
Light pad (if you have one)

Short text: poem, saying, lyric etc. 5-15 words

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Yukimi Annand is a calligrapher, lettering and book artist with a background in visual communication design. She is passionate about the beauty of the Roman alphabet and creates unique and distinctive artwork with her love of calligraphic mark making incorporated with nature. She has been instructing workshops around the world since 2010, and she finds the value in sharing ideas with students. Her works have been exhibited in the US, Canada, Japan, and European countries, and have also been included in calligraphy collections.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Let's dive in and explore Legende, a calligraphic hand that originates from a typeface designed by type designer Ernst Schneidler in 1937. After a quick look at the typeface, I will introduce and demonstrate a modified Legende for contemporary use.

Zoom recording will be available until November 30, 2026.

SUPPLY LIST:

This is a suggested list. Do not buy anything new. Use the broad edge tool you feel comfortable using.

Pen: Pilot Parallel Pen, calligraphy marker, or metal nibs (speedball, Brause, Mitchell). Suggested sizes: 3.8 mm, 3.5 mm, 3 mm, 2 mm
Media: ink, gouache, or ink cartridge for parallel pens
Paper: layout paper, grid paper, or hot press paper, any size
Pencil, eraser, ruler/t-square, surface to work on
Text: quotes, poems, alphabet sentences

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Jane Shibata is a part-time faculty member in the art department at Santa Monica College and runs a design business specializing in the lettering arts in Los Angeles. Jane was a former City of Los Angeles calligrapher and did calligraphic contract work for the Los Angeles County Graphic Arts division. She is a long-time SfC member, currently the outreach chair on the board, coordinates outreach events, and taught many workshops for the Society for Calligraphy. Jane is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers for SfC outreach events.

Paper Embroidery (December 19, 2026)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Want to embellish a photo, postcard, or a paper piece with something other than paint or ink? In this workshop, you will learn how to use the tools and various kinds of stitches to make it your own work of art.

Class will start at 9am and we will have a half hour lunch break around noon.

Class will be recorded and the recording will be available until January 31, 2026.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

From Dorothy Yuki: Since 1964, after college, I became an owner of a manufacturing business, In Good Company. We were the suppliers to Macy's USA, William/Sonoma and military canteens throughout the world with kitchen goods...aprons, potholders, placemats, napkins and a lot of stuff and nonsense. I sold the business in 1977 and became a design and production consultant to the Fashion Industry and the entertainment production companies. I did volunteer work with the Sierra Gorda Ecological group in Mexico from 2003 to the present. I was also the master educator for the San Francisco Fashion Incubator until 2020. I have been teaching arts and crafts since 2000. I have been a President of Friends of Calligraphy and a member of Society for Calligraphy, Pacific Scribes, Portland Society for Calligraphy and Escribiente Calligraphy Society. I have been a teacher for San Francisco Center for the Book, SCRAP-sf, Ruth's Table, Letterform Archive and others here in San Francisco. I've also taught in Europe, South America and Mexico. However, at my age, I am still learning but want to pass on and share what I know.
