PRETTY PAISLEY LETTERS with Cecilia Boschi
This SfC sponsored workshop will take place online with Zoom: Sunday, January 5 & Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 9:00am - 11:30am, Pacific US Time, for both sessions.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
In this short workshop, we will learn about the interesting design possibilities offered by a type of paisley decoration that was used in the 16th and 17th century.
These decorating elements, that look like a pattern, but are not, are particularly suitable to accompany the elegance of the magnificent Roman capitals used for monograms and drop caps at the beginning of a sentence or line.
We will observe the shapes used originally and make them contemporary by drawing them with pointed nibs, tempera, watercolors and metallic pigments.
Session 1 will be dedicated to the basic elements, shapes and to learning the general rules of a paisley design around a letter, compositions for separators or frames. In Session 2 we will build a paisley design together and go through troubleshooting, tips and tricks of paisley designs.
Workshop Fee: $55.00 - no refunds.
A zoom invitation/link will be sent a few days before the start of the workshop.

WORKSHOP SUPPLY LIST:
If you wish to work along with the Cecilia, please have the following with you:
- Layout / cartridge / Fabriano Accademia or your favourite paper (A4 size will be fine for pencil drafts, smaller sized paper to ink your final work)
- H pencil, sharpener, rubber
- Ruler (10cm or longer)
- Pen holder
- Pointed nib (medium flexible pointed nib, avoid the Gillott303-Hunt101-Principal nibs for this class - crown nibs work best)
- Either ink or diluted gouache / watercolour paint (if you’re using a fountain pen ink, please be sure to add a few drops of gum arabic to make it flow slowly off your nib)
- Round, square or other shaped flat templates to create a design around your letter
If you are going to use thin / lightweight paper such as layout, then you can use the sample letters/designs provided with the handout. If not – it will save time to have a letter or two in Roman Capitals penciled, not taller than 1.5in (about 3cm) ready for session 2.
Both sessions of this workshop will be recorded and the recording will be available until March 5, 2025.
