Going Around in Circles -Introduction to Celtic Knotwork in the Round

    Instructor: Nancy Hays Hills

This workshop is sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Regional

Many of us have spent happy hours doodling Celtic knots in the margins of notebooks, filling squares and rectangles with knot patterns, and perhaps even have gone on to incorporate these designs into pieces of art. For those of you with some experience in drawing knots and who have an itch to take things a little further, this class will show how to begin to place knotwork in a circle. In this three and a half hour class we will learn the basics: how to draw concentric circles and divide them into sections to create the knot work dot grid, how to weave a basic knot, and how to vary the pattern for more interesting designs. There will be handouts to get you started, but we’ll be making our own circles from scratch. We’ll be working mostly in pencil – and we’ll be doing a lot of erasing as we go!

    Workshop Fee: $30.00

This workshop is open to all SfC members. If you are not a member and wish to take this workshop please follow the directions on the home page to become a member and then you can register for the workshop.

Nancy Hays Hills is an artist and Episcopal deacon living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She began drawing as soon as she could hold a crayon, and was lucky enough to parents who encouraged their shy child to express herself on paper – especially her father, who would amuse her by drawing cartoons, sometimes in ballpoint pen on the bottoms of her feet! She took her first calligraphy course at age 17, and has incorporated lettering in her art ever since. She combines art and ministry by sending one-of-a-kind cards and envelopes to people in her parish, and leading mini creative classes over Zoom. Her artwork has been featured in Bound & Lettered, Alphabet, and the latest Speedball Textbook.
