Saturday and Sunday, August 23-24, 2025 9:30 PM-4:30 PM (PDT), plus a review session on Saturday, August 30, 9:30-12:30
$80 (all paid workshops are for Members-only) No refunds.
Creative tiny foundational letterforms and Roman capitals using the versatile
pointed pen will be our focus for this workshop.
We will begin our study working with monoline forms, then use the
pointed pen. We will look at variations and how to achieve details while
reducing the x-height of our letters. The roman hand is a long time love of
mine. I have gravitated to the Roman hands minuscule as well as majiscule for
their versatility and elegance. As I often work with small letterforms, the
pointed pen is the tool that helps provide the refinement and elegance I am
looking for.
I’m excited share with you the delight in creating these delicate and charming
letterforms.
Workshop recommended for all levels. The recording will be available for 3 months.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: In this class we’ll dive into the art of drawing Roman capitals using pencils and other drawing tools. We’ll start with the basics - formal letterforms and a simple pressure-and-release technique - before exploring all the possiblilities that will bring the letters to life. Along the way, you’ll discover a variety of creative variations that will make Roman capitals one of your most expressive and versatile hands. And while these letters may have a reputation for being serious, we’ll have some seriously good fun working with them!
All levels welcome. Recording will be available for three months.
ABOUT MARIE: Marie Fredriksson is a calligrapher based in southern Sweden, with a passion for calligraphy that started in her early teens. During the pandemic, Marie expanded her formal calligraphy skills by attending a variety of online classes focusing on letter drawing. This marked a pivotal shift in her artistic approach, transitioning from traditional calligraphy with nibs and ink to exploring drawn letterforms using pencils and other drawing tools. Her work spans from minimalistic pencil work to colorful and inventive lettering. She cites Jurgen Vercaemst, Yukimi Annand, Yves Leterme and Elmo van Slingerland as her most significant influences.

Uncial: Yesterday, Today & maybe Tomorrow with Barbara Close
IN PERSON WORKSHOP - SAVE THE DATE!

ABOUT THIS EVENT:
We will be taking a look into the marvels of the Uncial hand, using Parallel Pens. The beauty of this lettering style is that it can be stacked tightly on the page with very little interlinear space and thus fit a lot onto the page. With fun and interesting exercises, we will expand our knowledge of Uncial, create some appealing pages and have a great time along the way..
The Uncial script originated in the 2nd to 4th centuries. It was the primary book hand used in religious texts until the 9th century. It continued to evolve and was used in the hierarchy of scripts beginning in the Carolingian era. Today, this elegant alphabet may be used alone or combined with other hands. I love the rhythm of round and upright strokes that gives this hand its distinctive appearance.
