Workshops

The SfC generally has WORKSHOPS throughout the year, usually a variety of the different calligraphy-related disciplines our members enjoy. We invite instructors from all over the country and the world, who are part of the international calligraphic community, but we also invite instructors from our incredible local list.

Our seven Regional Chapters also organize all kinds of programs and workshops. Check the main Calendar listing for events in your area, or find the Regional representative in your area. Currently, events are being conducted online, for safety reasons.

    • Zoom - online

    Presenter: Beth Lee

    Sponsor: Inland Empire/Pomona Valley Chapter

Please note time change: due to a conflict being schedule, we needed to shift the time for this workshop.

About this workshop: The idea of monumental Roman capitals is intimidating for many calligraphers, but making and arranging small capitals on a page can help us to connect with the fun of lettering while focusing on some basic design principles.

Great for beginners and the experienced letterer alike, this workshop will explore the use of small broad-edged and pointed pens in the creation of texture in our texts through the manipulation of letter spacing, color changes, and other design decisions. We'll examine how the act of writing creates rhythm and movement. In the second session, we'll create tiny painted landscapes as a graphic element that melds beautifully with our texts.

This workshop will be recorded, with the recording available for one month to registered members.

About Beth: Beth Lee is a calligrapher and book artist living in Bozeman, Montana. She has been featured in Letter Arts Review, and her work is included in the Beinecke Rare Book Library, Baylor University Moody Library, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and in other institutional and private collections around the United States.

    Presenter: Andrea Wunderlich

    Sponsor: Inland Empire/Pomona Valley chapter

About the workshop: You might already be a big fan of gothic and blackletter, but it happened to me that I didn't like Rudolf Koch's gothic work when I first saw it many years ago at the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach. I was especially shocked by his very expressive works and couldn´t believe that he is the same person who also designed famous typefaces like the Maximilian or the Wilhelm-Klingspor type. So, yes - I´ve been afraid of him. But I also believe that the study of gothic and blackletter is very important for every calligrapher and person in love with letters. So, I began with my own research on Rudolf Koch as a person, lettering artist and craftsman. Come with me on a journey during which you learn more about the character of Rudolf and his ideas and thoughts, have a closer look at his career and work and after all, let all this be an inspiration for your own thoughts, ideas and work. We will go step-by-step through his instructions on blackletter-forms, look at some of his typefaces and then analyse his expressive gothic writing. All the new things you discover will flow into your own work. This is meant to be a trip into your own contemporary approach to gothic and blackletter.

About Andrea: Andrea Wunderlich is a freelance calligrapher & book artist from Germany. She's working on commissions on a wide field of sign-painting, lettering, logo-design and murals. In her free artwork she loves to follow the historic paths of alphabets and enjoys expressive transformation into the contemporary. Her art is shown both nationally and worldwide and is part of private and public collections like the Berlin calligraphy collection, the Center of Book Arts, San Francisco and the Int. Museum for Contemporary Calligraphy in Moscow. She is a member of German societies ars scribendi and Schreibwerkstatt Klingspor Offenbach (board member), CLAS fellow (Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society), full member of LX (Letter Exchange) in London and member of Friends of Calligraphy, San Francisco. www.andreawunderlich.com / instagram: wunderliche_welt
